I’m on a mission lately to get REALLY organised. I decided I’d had enough of days where I felt less than in control and I needed some strategic planning going on in my life.
Juggling being a busy mama, working part time (but in my head full time!) and all the other stuff one needs to do in a day, like eat, shop, walk the dog, exercise, sleep, clean and live ones life was proving overwhelming.
I thought I’d better learn from those who do productivity very well. So I’ve been soaking up and studying new ways to be more productive, efficient and organised from some top experts in the field.
Here’s what I’ve discovered that’s been super helpful.
1. Clear out the clutter in your head.
Write down all your to-do’s in your head. EVERYTHING. Work, play, personal, home, love, family, food whatever.
NOTE: The act of writing down everything in itself starts the process of creating space (mostly in your head!), relief, and a happy sense of reclaiming control.
NEXT: Look at everything you’ve written down and put the individual ‘to do’s’ into categories of time, for example:
Today. The next 7 days. 2 weeks. 1 month. 6 months. 1 year.
Go with what feels right for you. Create time frames that suit you and your needs.
THEN: Get your diary and start shifting the ‘to do’s’ into your diary where you see fit.
Be realistic, not dreamy here. No high expectations. Less pressure. Be honest with yourself.
If you’re looking at your day and how to get more organised, think about your priorities for that day. These are things you must do NO MATTER WHAT.
2. Focus your thoughts at the beginning of each day.
ASK: What am I excited about today? Or what could make me feel excited and more enthusiastic? What am I grateful for? Focus on what IS working in your life, what’s good. Ultimately begin as you wish to proceed. It usually works.
NEXT: Based on step one, choose the actions or activities you are going to do, and that are a priority. Make conscious decisions and feel in control rather than drifting from one thing to the next.
ASK: How can I make this more do-able and enjoyable? What will I reward myself with once it’s done? This can be applied to work related projects, admin, chores around the house, whatever!
If you’ve got things to do you less than love, change your attitude. You’ve got to do them, so why not choose to make them as light and fun as you can?
You could listen to a favourite play list whilst you iron, cook or do your accounts.
Think about how you’ll feel when it’s done. Begin with the end in mind, and enjoy the process as much as you can.
3. Ask for help. Hire help in.
Ask for help. It’s simple, but effective. If you have people around you who can help – family, friends, neighbours. Ask them. I’m sure they’d be only too happy to. Remember they are not mind readers.
Or if you’re offered help in whatever shape, take it. Accept it with open arms. Be grateful.
Hire help in. If you’re a busy person, parent, business owner, whatever. Think about what help you could outsource that would make a difference to you.
Things like having a cleaner once a week really helps in my home. If you need bigger picture help and support, find the right people and go get it.
Remember we all need help to get things done and feel more in control of our lives.
